A career is a journey and not a destination.

To kick-start this journey you need a qualification which provides you with the eligibility to apply for a job, it's like possessing an entry ticket to a fair. This is analogous to getting a call for an interview or being considered for promotion.

After you have gained entry, your success in an interview or your job in the future has little to do with your qualification(s), instead, it depends on how well you are prepared when the opportunity presents itself.

So, how do you prepare to be successful in your career?

Success is an outcome

Irrespective of your choice of profession, there is almost no change in the effort that you must put in or the strategy you must adopt in order to be successful.

To understand this, let’s think about a professional athlete who has set his mind on winning a gold medal in the upcoming Olympics. Our athlete has around 4 years to prepare. The total effort that this athlete must put in to be prepared for the event is 35,942,400 seconds (which is almost 36 million seconds!). This total effort comes from 8 hours of practice a day, working for 6 days a week, 52 weeks a year for 4 years.

It is interesting to note that the athlete trains for almost 36 million seconds for a race that lasts less than 10 seconds - this is focus, hard work and perseverance all rolled into one.

How does our athlete spend these 36 million seconds? - this effort is spent on;
  1. doing the right things (strategy or planning for success),
  2. acquiring the right skills and
  3. practice
The effort of 36 million seconds is the price an athlete pays just to compete in the Olympics. Likewise, anyone who wishes to be successful in their careers must be prepared to pay a price of this measure to be successful!

Now, think about your own career, irrespective of whether you are an early stage career professional or a mid-level career professional. In order to achieve career success you are required to;
  1. put in effort to build a relevant skill-set
  2. acquire characteristics that differentiate you from your competitors and
  3. you must be able to demonstrate your capabilities to your boss or your interviewer.

In this book, I present a structured approach to;
  • make career choices that suit you as an individual,
  • define your career goals,
  • build key characteristics to stand apart from the crowd,
  • plan and acquire relevant skills.

In short, this book serves as a guide for you to define your own Roadmap to Career Success.

Your career spans across many years, maybe decades. As you progress in your career, you will discover that
  1. you are constantly evolving (your aspirations, your expectations from your career, your personal likes and dislikes etc.) and
  2. your circumstances are also evolving with you (job descriptions, a new role, new environment when you change your job, technology at work, your personal commitments and obligations etc).
This presents you with an excellent opportunity to make a detailed career progression plan, execute and fine-tune your plan as you move ahead in your career.

This book is not intended as a one time read, instead, I recommend that you read it as many times as possible, throughout your career, whenever you find the need to reinvent yourself. I truly believe, that you will learn something new and be inspired each time you refer to this book.
